Citrine & Topaz - The Birthstone For November

November is lucky enough to have two birthstones, Citrine and Topaz.

Citrine

Citrine colour ranges from a light or pale yellow right through to fiery orange. It is part of the Quartz family of gemstones and so is quite durable, sitting at 7 on the MOHs scales of hardness, making it suitable for daily wear.

Citrine is often regarded as a healing gemstone for its ability to soothe and relax people or remove negative thoughts and feelings. The Chinese also believe it creates wealth and prosperity.

Topaz

Topaz comes in a range of colours including yellow, which is perhaps why it has been often confused with citrine in the past.

The term topaz is derived from the word Topazios, which is the Greek name for St John’s island in the Red Sea.

Topaz measures 8 on the MOHs scale of hardness and so it is very durable for everyday wear.

Topaz is said to have the ability to calm tempers and prevent nightmares. Even African Shamans used it for its healing powers.

Opal - The Birthstone Of October

Here's  Jay’s Jewellery  take on this months Birthstone, Opal. Opal is believed to originate from the Greek word Opallios, meaning, ‘to see a change in colour.’ Australia is the main source of all different colours and types of Opal, approximately 95% of the world's supply. Aborigines believed that the earth creator came to earth on a rainbow, leaving colourful ‘rainbow-like’ opals where ever his feet touched.  Sir Walter Scott’s book, ‘Ann Of Geierstein’ fro, 1829 soon changed how opals luck was perceived. The princess wore an opal which changed colour with her mood until a drop of holy water touched it and destroyed its colour. The princess died shortly afterwards, giving it the perception of being unlucky. The Olympic Australis is considered to be the worlds most expensive opal.
